“The Devil’s at my door, he’s a-knockin’. I kicked him in the nuts now I’m running.”
If anything sums this band’s music up, it’s got to be the above line from “Devil at My Door”. Full of “don’t-give-one-single-crap” attitude and a high octane sound to back it up, Fatcastor are awesome.
They’ve been through a huge number of lineup changes, but it seems like they’ve finally got their lineup settled, and that’s a relief. Too many times nowadays you see bands fall apart before they even begin because the right chemistry isn’t quite there between the members. But enough of the drama, this isn’t TMZ. On to the music.
They’ve currently got two singles on radio rotation in Atlanta: “Winter” and the aforementioned “Devil at My Door”, but trust me, these aren’t the only Fatcastor tracks that deserve your listen. “Unwanted” is another great track that opens with rhythmic drum triplets and the intensity doesn’t let up for the entirety of the 4-minute track. “Indecision” and “Break” both feature catchy-as-hell choruses and strong guitar work. Then you’ve got “One Brain Cell”, “Moonshine Skinny”, “Four Walls”, and… well look at that; I’ve named all of their songs!
The guitars are heavy, the melodies solid and the grooves tight. A big standout for me is the vocal performance. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Mike Rock (what a name!) combines the range of Myles Kennedy and the dryness of Jerry Cantrell to deliver something genuinely unique.
